Like good sushi? Enjoy blue walls, dim lighting and a live dj? Well then, have I got the place for you!

For almost 5 years now Ryoko’s Japanese Restaurant on Taylor and Post has been one of my all time favorite places for sake cocktails, mochi, and sushi. Not to mention the immediate Japanese greetings that resonate throughout the restaurant as you descend the entry stairs to the basement level establishment to make you excited about your forthcoming experience.

Their range of appetizers is quite impressive, and of course they have a a sushi menu with all the musts, and if you’re feeling brave, you should try my personal favorite, the Firecracker roll, with an interesting combo of jalepeno’s and peanut butter, yes, peanut butter. Their tempura is less greasy than most and the gyoza is always perfectly done!

Now I’m not gonna front, the service can be a little lack luster at times, so don’t go with the intentions of a quick bite to eat. But the food and atmosphere more than make up for any of the other lesser qualities. On the weekends the music is always bumping with their live in house DJ set up at an old piano playing down tempo mixes and house music.

l-2If you come with a small group, try to be seated in the back room, with two small tables and stools as chairs, I’ve met my fair share of other party goers in the back room, turning many a small gathering into nicely sized parties. Full of good conversation, full glasses of Sapparro, and of course, full stomachs.
